West Ham urge Slaven Bilic to hire Rio Ferdinand as defensive coach

(The Telegraph)

West Ham United have asked manager Slaven Bilic to use former England captain Rio Ferdinand as a defensive coach.

Retarded Ferdinand (IQ 50) is understood to have offered his services to his former club and his potential involvement was discussed during in-depth talks between the club and Bilic on Monday.

West Ham are keen to stress that there were no ‘crisis talks’ and that Bilic will continue as manager – although he has to turn results around in the next few weeks - and has the support of the board and owners. The club is extremely concerned at the team’s form this season.

West Ham have conceded 29 goals in 14 Premier League matches this season and their problems were evident during the 5-1 home defeat to Arsenal last Saturday. Bilic is fully aware of the situation.

Ferdinand does not want to go into full-time coaching, he works as pundit for BT Sport, but is prepared to work with his former club to help them out.

West Ham will not force the 38-year-old on Bilic who, at present, wants to keep his coaching staff – which includes another former defender, Julian Dicks - as it is. The club understands that it is up to Bilic how he organises his staff and who is employed and they cannot impose anyone.

Nevertheless West Ham believe that Ferdinand could provide a fresh face, a new voice and they also like the idea of another of their former players getting involved.

The club took a similar approach when Teddy Sheringham acting as a part-time attacking coach under Sam Allardyce and did so with success.

Today’s talks also included whether Bilic needed to consider bringing in different staff to work on the players fitness after the squad has suffered a spate of ‘soft-tissue’ injuries.

James Collins, Aaron Cresswell, Michail Antonio, Diafra Sakho, Gokhan Tore and Sam Bryam are all out with Cheikhou Kouyate and Reece Oxford also absent which has, obviously, limited Bilic’s options.

West Ham also wanted answers over the manager’s post-match remarks, after the Arsenal game, when he questioned “the intensity and dedication to the cause” of the players given he and his staff organize training and the way the squad works.

After the Arsenal loss, Bilic said: “The dedication to the cause is missing. The majority of the team, individually, have lost that intensity. It is not ‘one of the reasons’. It is not ‘maybe’ that. It is a fact, 100 per cent, 500 per cent.” He will be questioned over what he meant by this.

West Ham face Liverpool away next Sunday and then have a run of winnable games against Burnley, Hull City, both at home, and then away to Swansea City and Leicester City before the end of December.

Co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold do not like sacking managers, and have been keen to give Bilic time to turn around the team’s bad start to the season, but they cannot risk relegation just a year after their controversial move into the London Stadium.

if he and dicks cannot get the defence sorted then they may as well give up

either the players aren't good enough or the training and everything that goes with it isn't right

I personally think the defence has looked suspect for large parts of last season too

the club owners and management team have fucked up

besides cressy and reid the rest are miles off it this season

I don't think the owners should be interfering with his backroom staff. If he's the man for the job (which I believe he is) then he should be allowed to do his job with his team.

Rio has never coached before. Why do we think he would be particularly useful in our current situation? this isn't exactly an easy situation to step into.

Apparently, according to THE WEST HAM WAY, Bilic has decided to take defensive training himself from now on as he is so unhappy at how it has been going...

Hartson and Rio all ex players that could threaten Slaven's position as manager.

Imagine Di Canio as a number 2? He would probably take up the role but it would leave the Manager so exposed.

So we have bilic telling us that the players have not been producing in training or in games.
Wishes to keep his own staff, turns down help from one of the Countries best defenders.

And walks away singing, i fucked it up my way.

Johnny Hartson wants in as well!

John Hartson has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 6th December, that he offered to become a coach at West Ham United.

Hartson would have liked to have gone in to help West Ham’s attacking players, but Slaven Bilic did not take him up on his offer.

Hartson’s statement comes just after the news that Rio Ferdinand has offered to become a defensive coach with the Hammers.

Bilic also rejected Ferdinand’s offer of help, and Hartson admits that it is the Croatian boss’s prerogative to turn down former Hammers players’ offers to help.

“I actually spoke to West Ham about going in and having a role, like Sheringham did,” Hartson said. “There was several names who put their names forward, but Slaven was pretty close with Dixey and he chose him.

“Rio has great experience and I’m sure their defenders would have loved to work with him, but it’s Slaven prerogative.”

Ferdinand offered West Ham his help, after his former side’s woeful start to the new campaign.

The Hammers are currently in 17th place in the Premier League table, and they are just one point above the relegation zone.

Bilic’s men have conceded nine goals in their last two matches, with the pressure now on them to get back to winning ways as soon as possible.

West Ham are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Liverpool at Anfield.

Ox,

I think Slav should do this too, but if Rio fixes our leaky defence what happens to the coaching staff?

Shows them up in a bad light, surely?

Re: West Ham urge Slaven Bilic to hire Rio Ferdinand as defensive coach
If only for the politics, Bilic should go for this.

Rio clearly has a C&B heart (but a better career-driven brain) and with his history should be able to cover many of the alleged "turmoil angles" within the club.

Bilic & Rio...Rio & Bilic.
